Android™ apps
Android is mobile operating system developed by Google and based on the Linux kernel. It was unveiled in 2007 and is now by far the leading mobile OS in the United States, with a market share of 33%.
Android handsets are created by numerous manufacturers including HTC, Lenovo, Samsung, Motorola and LG. More than 70,000 third party applications are available for download for Android devices from the Android Marketplace.

iOS® apps
Apple’s iPhone was also unveiled in 2007. It runs the company’s iOS operating system, which is similar to Mac OSX.
The iPhone has so far evolved through 4 generations and has a 22% market share in the United States. More than 250,000 “apps” are available for download from the Apple App Store for the iPhone. By contrast with Android applications, iPhone apps must be approved by Apple in order to be allowed for download from the store. In addition to the iPhone, the Apple iPad has sold more than 19 million units since its release in 2010 and the iPad 2 sold out internationally in one day. This device also runs Apple’s iOS operating system and, as with the iPhone, apps are downloaded via the Apple App Store.
